Modern in Minneapolis
June 1st, 2012
This weekend, head over to the MIA (Minneapolis Institute of Arts) for an exhibition on modern art. Two Sides of the Modern: Maverix ReMix looks at the two major movements of modern art on both sides of the Second World War. Twenty three selected works of art from the collections of Myron Kunin and Gordon Locksley reveal the individual approaches to modern art, as well as recurrent themes that run through the years. A particular favourite of mine is the works of Ralston Crawford. He often painted the mundane industrial side of America that architects like Corbusier traveled to Minnesota see firsthand. Using simplified forms, contrasting, seemingly flat colours and bright light, he created beautiful paintings that glorified an America of production and hard work.

Grand Ol' Day kicks off its annual celebration this Sunday, June 3rd on Grand Avenue in St. Paul. After contemplating the masterpieces of the modern greats and our local heros, head to The Current's stage at Dixies on Grand for some great local musical talent. From noon to 5p, the line-up features Solid Gold, The Soviettes, Blind Shake, and the lovable Charlie Parr. Along the 3 mile stretch of Grand Ave, you'll find fantastic state fair-style foods, hand-made goods, music and of course gardens of adult beverages. Let's hope the weather holds out!
