The architecture of David Salmela is a quiet one, in tune with nature and the moments in the day that deserve a quiet reflection. Practicing mostly in his native north woods of Minnesota, Salmela has developed a unique style perfectly suited to the long winters and heavy snowfalls. His architectural and furniture designs exhibit the serenity and simplicity found in the modernism of his Finnish roots, but all have the distinct playful Salmela perspective. He designs with a keen eye toward sunlight, activity and warm comfort, completely in sync with the outdoor-centered lifestyle of the heavily Scandinavian-influenced region of northern Minnesota.

David Salmela, FAIA, is the principal architect of his firm Salmela Architect, based in Duluth, Minnesota. Throughout his career, his projects have won 14 Minnesota American Institute of Architects awards, and 14 national architectural awards, including a National AIA Honor Award for Architecture.
